Hey MelaninBae! Did you hear?! July is National Black Family Month!
Established in 2006, National Black Family Month was created to celebrate the Black family unit! We encourage you to try and find time to spend with your loved ones, and to learn more about your family history and each other! If you’re looking for some fun ways to celebrate, keep reading below for a few safe, outdoor and indoor activities that we personally love and recommend! 👇
1. Picnic in The Park🧺🥖
Gather the family and head over to your local park to settle down under a nice tree with your favorite snacks and treats! Be sure to pack some playing cards to teach the kids the traditional game of Spades or Go Fish, and your kid’s favorite bikes, scooters, and helmets! If it’s a particularly windy day, grab a kite for the inevitable bonding that will occur as you try to figure out how to fly it! 😂💯
2. Scenic Hike🌄
With this beautifully warm July weather, a family walk is definitely in order! Take a leisurely stroll around your neighborhood with the family, or up the eye-candy and explore some of your local reservations and trails! Check out the National Trails System to discover trails near you!
3. Biking 🚲
There’s nothing like sweating together to help a family bond! 😂🥵 And biking is a great way to explore some beautiful scenery together and help reinforce healthy life skills and activities to your kids! If you live in the city, look for a bike-friendly park or bike trails near you to get you started! And as always, be sure to wear your helmet! 😉
4. Arts and Crafts🎨🖌
Looking for indoor entertainment or something a little more stationary? Arts and crafts are a great way to spend some quality, creative time together! Some of the best conversations can happen while making art; it’s an experience that can help to bond the family together, and as a bonus, you’ll also discover some new interests and skills that you never knew your family members had! Some of our favorite, simple arts and crafts activities to do with our children include:
- Painting on canvas or plaster figurines with acrylic paint
- Scrapbooking with magazines, scissors, markers, and glue sticks
Or if you’d prefer something a bit quicker to clean up, the following are still great ways to bond with your family:
- Crayons and coloring books
- Scratch and sketch books on holographic paper
- Chalk to decorate the driveway and sidewalk!
There’s so many opportunities to connect, so go have fun creating beautiful art and memories!
5. Beach Day! 🏖
Bring your kids to the beach for some family fun! While we love a good sunbathe, remember this is a family affair, so be sure to get in that water too! You’ll be surprised how splashing, laughing, swimming and hopping over waves like you did when you were a child, will bring you closer together and help you bond with your children! They’ll be able to see that you can hang and have fun just like them! Be sure to bring some beach toys and balls for beach volleyball and sandcastle building!
*Bonus: 6. Family Game Night 🎲
Family game night is another great way to bond with your loved ones this month! From board games to trivia, all ages can get in on the fun! The best part about family game night is that you can enjoy this activity both outdoors and indoors! If you’re looking to bring family game night outdoors, grab your favorite card and board games to your patio, or sit under the clouds while enjoying the warm July weather. If it happens to be raining or too windy for card games, family game night can quickly be set up indoors for great family fun! Our top picks for family game night include:
- Uno – card game
- Spades – card game
- Go Fish – card game
- Monopoly – board game
- CandyLand – board game
- Sorry – board game
*Fun fact* Did you know that when playing UNO you canNOT stack a draw two on a draw 2?! 🤯Don’t believe us? Check out Uno’s official tweet on the rule.
Spending time with your family this month, and every month, is important for family bonding! Seeing #blackboyjoy and #blackgirlmagic within the Black family unit will not only boost the confidence of our children, but also change the way in which the Black family is perceived.
Whatever activity you choose, don’t forget sunscreen to protect your melanin 😉and the Melanin Haircare Stretch Visor to shade your eyes from the sun! 🌞
Happy celebrating! 🎉
